Home Extension Project
Bought by its current owners in 2006, Westlodge is a ‘C’ Listed property on the edge of Angus dating back to the late 19th Century.
At the time of purchase, an extension was added to provide additional open plan living and kitchen space and a garage. However, 11 years on and to meet the needs of a growing family, the owners decided to embark on an ambitious plan to extend Westlodge by approximately 100% of the floor area.
While providing significantly more family space, the owners also wanted to include an integrated salon for mother-of-two Debbie Milne to pursue her thriving hairdressing business. The couple also sought to create a warm and welcoming space outside, to accommodate a home office just a stone’s throw from the front door.
The prime objective was to create more living and working space while being sympathetic to the existing property and its rural surroundings.
Working in conjunction with award-winning Dundee based architects Andrew Black Design, GoSustainable was the main contractor for the build.
The Garden Bothy Company of Dundee was then commissioned to create a complimentary garden room/office to complete the brief. Ground screw foundations were installed by GoSustainable as the approved installer of STOPDIGGING! in Scotland.
The extensive work which GoSustainable recommended and carried out is detailed below.
The following works began in April 2017, with works completed in November 2017.
Outside, The Garden Bothy Company built a composite wood garden room to accommodate a home office, with composite wood decking leading from the new lounge. Designed and manufactured to be low maintenance and withstand the Scottish elements, the bothy enjoys an authentic timber look but without the maintenance associated with timber.
The external landscaping is still a work in progress, with landscaping to the courtyard entrance and remaining garden ground due to be complete by the Summer.
Following the completion of the extension and renovation, which took just under six months, the family moved back into the brand new house in November 2017, just in time for Christmas.
Debbie Milne commented,
We are absolutely delighted with the extension which has made a huge difference to the way we live and work.
When it comes to family life, which was the main driver, we now have a kitchen which is very much the central point of our home, ideal for family get-togethers and, with doors opening out to the garden and patio, a great socialising space.
On top of that, GoSustainable’s amazing refurbishment of what was the lodge house is just fantastic and has created privacy and space for us all. The girls now have their own, much-needed space with en-suite bedrooms and a television room where they can have friends round.
