Westlands Supported Accommodation, a family business offering high-quality living space for adults with learning disabilities, is located in Broughty Ferry, Dundee.
Owned by Avril Kerr of Kerr Care since 2007, Westlands provides short, medium and long-term stays for its clients. Providing 24 hour care for those over the age of 18, the team of trained staff supports residents to develop and maintain their daily living and social skills, while encouraging independence.
Westlands is a beautiful, 19th Century home which has been lovingly restored to provide residents with a spacious and comfortable environment in which they feel safe, secure and, most importantly, at home.
Situated on Strathern Road with its own mature gardens, private lounge and visitor parking, accommodation within this 10 bedroom property has recently been complemented through the acquisition of an additional property located just a short walk across the road, which Kerr Care bought in July 2016.
Having worked with Callum Milne, GoSustainable’s Managing Director on other projects in the past, Avril Kerr approached the company in February 2017 with a view to completely refurbishing the annexe.
“When we called GoSustainable in, it’s fair to say we were pretty daunted by the scale of the works. However, for us, it was about meeting the changing needs of our residents and saving them from another move further down the line so we decided to explore what could be done within the budget we had.”
GoSustainable recommended a complete strip-out of the property and provided cost and time estimates for a full refurbishment of the existing four bedroom property, with an attic conversion to create an additional bedroom and en-suite.
The extensive work which GoSustainable recommended and carried out is detailed below.
The works began in February 2017, with the annexe officially opening for residents in February 2018.
The five-bedroom annexe now houses two bedrooms, fully fitted wetroom, dining kitchen and lounge on the ground floor, two further bedrooms and a shower room on the first floor, and a bedroom with en-suite on the top floor.
“Our clients are delighted – two of them could no longer use the stairs so we were keen to provide them with a better and more manageable solution. They absolutely love their rooms and everything that comes with them, from the disabled access and wetroom right through to the carpets and decoration. The loft conversion has gone down a treat with one of our younger and more independent clients – it’s essentially her own flat.
“The other huge advantage to working with GoSustainable was that we knew where we were financially. They were upfront from day one and kept to the original quote, as well as the timescales being exact. Nothing went over so we always knew where we were, and what it would cost. The tradesmen were also great throughout the project and I could just let them get on with it. I would highly recommend GoSustainable to anyone with a significant project on their hands, as it really does take the stress away and save time and money long-term.”
