Having identified energy solutions for everything from rural retreats to freezing factories, we had no reservations when faced with the prospect of an entire development of housing association homes.
With damp and condensation starting to affect a number of properties at Craigiebank in Fintry, Abertay Housing Association in Dundee approached us to undertake an energy efficiency upgrade and full refurbishment of 88 houses.
With tenants ranging from retired couples and shift workers to single parents and busy families, many understandably felt apprehensive about the prospect of upheaval, of packing up and moving into temporary Abertay accommodation.
Would the works be delayed? Would they end up in inferior accommodation? How would they manage to pack everything by themselves and, one of the biggest concerns, would they return home to dust and mess?
However, at GoSustainable, we’re not just about ‘Making Buildings Work’ – we also place a huge emphasis on client satisfaction. As tenants prepared to leave their homes for eight weeks, it was our job to put a slick programme of works into practice, replicated across all of the properties.
And so it began … in June 2016, the first tenants were decanted by Forfar Removals into a previously refurbished property, with one household moving out and another moving back in weekly.
While tenants settled into their temporary homes, their properties were stripped back to their shell.
With bespoke polyurethane spray foam internal wall insulation put in place, we then went on to install new kitchens, bathrooms, doors, even carpets – the lot.
So was it worth it? Absolutely! Not only did tenants return to warmer, more energy efficient homes, they are now enjoying significantly reduced energy bills.
Tom Cunningham, who lives in Craigie Avenue with his wife Joan said,
“Of course, it was a little inconvenient to move out for seven or eight weeks but our decant house was beautiful, having also recently been transformed. We were also really impressed by Forfar Removals, who offered to do everything and were so helpful. There was a lot to be done but Abertay and GoSustainable made everything as easy as it could be. The way the different trades came in to ‘do their bit’ was also so slick and organised.
“Everything is so much better than it was – mainly the warmth and energy efficiency of course but also better sound protection from the property upstairs and no more draughty windows. Despite the house being stripped right back to a shell, we returned to a clean, beautiful and much warmer home – it was like walking into a showhouse.”
As for Abertay Housing Association, they have ‘future-proofed’ these properties and ensured their long-term viability within our stock for up to 50 years.
And GoSustainable? We loved working on the project and, most of all, reading feedback like this, which made going the extra mile more than worth it!
‘outstanding – a big thank you to all!’
‘everything was great, any little things that needed done were done quickly’
‘couldn’t get better – polite and caring guys’
‘very pleased with the standard of work to the property’
